31. Floor or floor plates and operating
platforms around moving machinery and test beds must be kept free
from oil and loose material if accidents are to be avoided. Oil
should be transferred from drums to machines by pumps whenever
possible. Where pumps cannot be used, care in handling oils will
avoid slippery floors. Loose material such as wrenches, lead
hammers, pieces of pipe, rubber hose, bolts, nuts, studs, etc., left
on the floor or platform, constitute a real hazard. The careful
workman will always keep things in their proper places.
32. Avoid fires through spontaneous
combustion by properly disposing of oily rags and waste. These must
not be placed in shop containers for waste. Oil rags should never be
piled up or thrown into corners. Rags or waste soaked with gasoline
or thinners and other flammable materials including paint filters
and paint floor sweepings must be deposited before the end of each
working day in special containers out of doors.
33. Never throw water on an electrical
fire.
34. Do not tinker with electrical
equipment. All alterations or repairs, including the changing or
testing of fuses, must be made only by authorized personnel. Ground
wires must be connected on all tools provided with
same.
35. Electrical cords should not run
across walkways.
36. All belt repairs are to be made
only by authorized employees.
37. Standing water should not be
permitted on any walking surface.
38. Adequate ventilation should be
provided so that employees can perform their assigned task in
safety.
39. Adequate ventilation should be
provided to prevent any accumulation of obnoxious fumes or flammable
vapors.
40. Accumulations of ice and snow
should be removed from parking lot areas and sidewalks on a timely
basis to prevent slips and falls.
41. Exterior sidewalks and parking
areas should be provided with adequate illumination.
42. All building exits should be
properly marked and a means of emergency lighting should be provided
within the building.
43. Boiler rooms, utility rooms and
other similar type rooms sould not be used for the storage of
combustible materials. Combustible materials could fall or be tipped
over and come into contact with a water heater or boiler
flame. |
