QUESTIONS TO
CONSIDER:
When discussing preventable accidents,
these are some questions to consider:
1. Does the driver have a safe driving
attitude? 2. Does the report indicate he or she considers the
rights of others or is there evidence of poor driving habits which
need changing? 3. Does the report indicate good judgement? Such
phrases as "I did not see?", "I didn't think", "I didn't expect", or
"I thought" are red flags indicating there is something wrong in the
driver's thinking. An aware driver should think, expect and see
hazardous situations in time to avoid collisions. 4. Was the
driver prepared to stop before entering the intersection? 5. At a
blind corner, did the driver pull out slowly, ready to apply the
brake pedal? 6. Did the driver make sure the other driver would
stop for a traffic light or stop sign? 7. Did the driver obey all
traffic signs? 8. Did the driver signal well in advance of his
change in direction? 9. Did the driver turn from the proper
lane? 10. Was the driver alert for the turns of other
vehicles? 11. Did the driver avoid overtaking and passing in the
intersection? 12. Did the driver refrain from jumping and
starting signal or riding through the caution light?
If the answer to any question is no,
the driver was not driving defensively and is at
fault. |
